Names and ambiguities#

Named for a peak, claimed as a DHP clone

Beidou is named after Beidou Peak. Accounts say Yao Yueming took cuttings there and at Jiulongke in the 1950s and 1960s, and that only a few 'Beidou No. 1' cuttings survived. Some writers call Beidou the 'true' Da Hong Pao. Others treat it as a separate famous bush, so 'Beidou' and 'DHP' labels overlap.

Notes#

The 2012 study of ten Wuyi mingcong placed Beidou in the earlier spring-picking group. This documents the studied accession’s behaviour, not a genetic match to a particular Da Hong Pao mother bush. Numbered Beidou selections should be identified individually rather than assumed to be interchangeable.
