六堡茶
Term · Classification
Liubao tea
Literal meaning
Liubao (township) tea
Definition#
A Guangxi dark tea associated with Liubao township in Cangwu county, Wuzhou. The Guangxi ordinance effective from 1 January 2026 defines it through suitable tea-leaf material, specified processing and ageing under national or local standards. Traditional and modern processing routes differ; modern refining can include wet-pile fermentation. Neither a fixed piling duration nor an areca-nut aroma should be assumed for every Liubao tea.

Common confusions#
- Western vendors list Liubao under pu'er; it is a distinct Guangxi dark tea.
- Areca-nut aroma is sometimes mistranslated as 'betel leaf'.
- Secondary texts miscite the standard, e.g. as 'GB/T 32719-2016 第3部分'. The Liubao part is GB/T 32719.4-2016 黑茶 第4部分:六堡茶.
- The previously cited 2025 certification draft does not establish a universal 45-day piling minimum or a required 5- or 15-year ageing period. T/GXAS 677—2024 sets fermentation controls and an end-point description, rather than a fixed duration in clause 9.3. Identify the actual process and applicable specification before quoting a time requirement.
