leafhopper-bitten

Literal meaning

touched by + saliva

Definition#

Leaf fed on by the tea green leafhopper (小绿叶蝉; zh.wikipedia gives Jacobiasca formosana), whose feeding makes the plant release defensive volatiles; after processing these give the honey and ripe-fruit notes of Oriental Beauty and of Taiwanese honey-aroma black tea (蜜香紅茶). Growers leave the insects unchecked in summer to obtain such leaf.
