Notes#
Founded by Chen Shenghe (陈升河), the company's chairman, who entered the tea trade in Shantou in 1973 and moved his business to Shenzhen in 1985. After a survey of Yunnan tea areas in summer 2006, the company registered 勐海陈升茶厂 and bought the old premises of the 福元昌号 house in Yiwu. In 2007 it set up on about 150 mu in Menghai (CFSN's 2024 figure is 200 mu) and pressed its first cake, 佳茗天成, of which 3,000 were made in late 2007. In early 2008, with approval from two levels of government, it signed a 30-year purchase agreement with Lao Banzhang village and paid for a primary processing plant there.
The '陈升老班章' cake dates from 2008 and became a reference point for Lao Banzhang. Further bases followed at Banpo Laozhai, Nannuo (agreement 18 March 2011), Naka in Mengsong (28 December 2012) and Yiwu, all on a 'company + base + farmer' model. The company was renamed 勐海陈升茶业有限公司 in 2010 and is in the Menghai County industrial park. The 陈升号 trademark was registered on 28 October 2009 and recognised as a China Well-known Trademark in 2017; the company says it is also registered in Taiwan, Hong Kong, the US, the EU, Japan and elsewhere.
A sister brand, 陈升福元昌, was launched around 2016-2017 under executive director and general manager Chen Zhibin (陈植滨) (Jiemian, Jan 2017). Counterfeiting is a known problem. In 2026 the company tied its wrapper anti-counterfeit codes to a 'one cake, one code' system: each cake's code links to its tong and case, and scans are logged so repeated scans flag possible fakes.
