Names and ambiguities#

Does factory digit 4 mean the Pu'er Tea Factory?

Yang Kai’s account in Pu Erh magazine assigns factory digit 4 to Pu Erh Tea Factory in its discussion of the 1976 numbering rules. The article explicitly says its transcription of the document has been adjusted; the complete original document has not been inspected here. Xiaguan’s own chronicle independently records the December 1976 numbering meeting and its own ending digit 3, but does not establish every factory assignment. The uncited factory list in English Wikipedia is not treated as contrary historical evidence. Codes should be checked for the particular producer, product and period rather than used as universal manufacturer identifiers.

Two companies descend from '云南普洱茶厂' (2004)

《标号级时代的星空丨那些民营茶厂(二)》 says that in October 2004 香港长泰实业(深圳)有限公司 bought the Pu'er County factory and formed 云南普洱茶(集团)有限公司. Both are from the same magazine. The sources do not say whether these were the same plant, different assets, or a brand-name purchase.

'Simao Tea Factory'

The cited sources do not establish a separate state 思茅茶厂. The 1975 factory was in Pu’er County, then part of Simao prefecture. From 1956 the Menghai factory was called 思茅专区勐海茶厂, according to 《历史上著名的普洱茶4大茶厂》. One successor’s name began 思茅永年. The label “Simao Tea Factory” alone does not distinguish these entities.

Notes#

The state-run Pu'er Tea Factory (国营普洱茶厂) was set up in 1975 by the local government in Pu'er County (普洱县, the name Ning'er county carried from 1951 to 2007). It was built on the site traditionally identified as the Qing-era Pu'er tribute-tea workshop. Several sources say it was named one of the four planned-economy pu'er factories and given the last export mark digit 4 (Kunming 1, Menghai 2, Xiaguan 3). It mainly made loose (sancha) pu'er. The 普秀 (Puxiu) trademark was registered in January 1994.

In October 2004 the factory was taken over by 香港长泰实业(深圳)有限公司 (Hong Kong Changtai Industrial, Shenzhen) and reorganised as 云南普洱茶(集团)有限公司, which kept the Puxiu mark. The same 《普洱》 magazine series also says a different buyer acquired '云南普洱茶厂' in 2004, forming 思茅永年茶业公司普洱茶厂, later renamed 云南普洱茶厂有限公司. Which company legally continues the state factory is not settled in the sources found. A NetEase article says the group set up an Yiwu branch factory in 2013.

The county name complicates sources. In 1975 the factory stood in 普洱县 within Simao prefecture. The county became 宁洱 in 2007, the same year Simao City became Pu'er City. Wrappers and articles may therefore say Pu'er, Simao or Ning'er for the same place.
