Reading the digits
Under the general convention described by TeaDB, 8653 reads as a 1986 recipe, leaf-size grade 5 and Xiaguan factory code 3. Path of Cha gives a different interpretation for Xiaguan: the third digit distinguishes raw 8653 from ripe 8663. This digit remains disputed here. TeaDB also observes that Xiaguan usually gives a pressing date, while Dayi uses production codes such as 901 or 902.
