Notes#

Mangzhi is in Anle administrative village, Xiangming, beside Gedeng, roughly 15–16 km wide and over 30 km long. It had contiguous gardens by the Yuan; Central-Plains merchants traded here by the late Ming, and under Kangxi its market Niuguntang (牛滚塘) was a key collecting point for the northern six mountains — locally said to predate Pu'er prefecture. Armed feuds in the late Xianfeng period drove farmers away and gardens were abandoned; recovery came only in the 1980s, and about 970 mu of old garden remain, with trees scattered among villages. A scholar's surveys found old-tree density falling from over 200 per mu to about 80.
