Notes#
The name is not a reliable year code#
In Olivier Schneider's interview, Vesper Chan links '88' to opening his business in 1988 and explains that the tea was already several years old when acquired in 1993. His brand's account describes late-1980s Menghai 7542 stock. These are participant accounts; they do not establish one universally agreed production-year range for every cake later sold under the name.
Recipe and provenance are separate#
Menghai 7542 identifies the recipe family, while this collector name depends on a particular selection and storage history. A 7542 wrapper, an ‘88’ inscription or an aged taste does not by itself demonstrate that chain. Modern commemorative products have their own producer and production year.
A collector name within Sheng Pu Erh#
This is a named collector group within Sheng pu'er, rather than a distinct botanical tea style. Its identity depends on the connection between recipe, producer, selection and storage history.
