Notes#

Origin and identification#

Dongting here means the East and West Dongting hills at Lake Tai, not Lake Dongting in Hunan.

Fine spiral-shaped leaves and visible pale hairs are characteristic. This entry concerns the place-specific tea; the shorter label Biluochun does not by itself establish that origin.

Tea among fruit trees#

Suzhou's 2024 protection ordinance defines a tea–fruit agricultural system: tea grows among trees such as loquat, citrus, bayberry, chestnut and plum. The same text identifies Dongshan and Jinting as the origin and primarily local small-leaf populations, while also allowing approved cultivars. Intercropping is part of the documented landscape; it is not evidence that fruit juice or fruit flavouring is added to the tea.

How the curl is made#

The ordinance describes hot fixation, rolling and shaping, rubbing into small groups to expose the pale hairs, and gentle final drying. Its dedicated label system records origin, cultivar, picking and processing. The yearly opening date is announced according to growth and weather, so 'early' needs a year and location, not just a sales adjective.

3

Tender shoots, not buds alone#

The picking account in Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, p. 50) calls for a bud with one just-opening leaf, followed by careful removal of coarse leaves and uneven material. It explicitly discourages bud-only picking, arguing that it weakens the finished tea’s flavour, aroma and shape. In this historical craft account, tenderness means a suitable young shoot rather than the smallest possible isolated bud.

Describes tea through the end of the twentieth century. Historical production figures, administrative boundaries and reported tree ages must be read in their original context, rather than as current facts.
