Mengding Shihua
Flat, straight bud green tea associated with Mengding in Sichuan.
Notes#
Manufacture. The agricultural account describes heat fixation followed by shaping in the pan, cooling, further pan work and low-temperature drying.
Distinction. Mengding Shihua differs from the curled Mengding Ganlu and the yellowed Mengding Huangya. Their shared place name does not make them interchangeable processing styles.
Protecting the early bud. Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, p. 718) describes picking buds as their protective scales open and avoiding damage after picking. After fixation, further pan work begins flattening them; later movements refine the shape and expose the pale hairs before basket drying. The small bud is therefore both a selection criterion and a fragile material whose appearance depends on careful handling.
