semi-ball and ball-rolled
Literal meaning
half + ball + shape / ball + shape
Definition#
Shape classes of cloth-rolled oolong: semi-ball (loosely curled, as in older Dong Ding and Taiwan oolong) and ball (tight pellets, as in Taiwan Tieguanyin and today's high-mountain oolong). Japanese-era Taiwanese classification already divided 包種 into strip, semi-ball and ball types; TRES now uses 球形 in the class names 清香型球形烏龍茶 and 焙香型球形烏龍茶. A fully tight ball (全球形) spread to Anxi in recent decades.
