冻顶乌龙凍頂烏龍
Term · Classification
Dong Ding oolong
Literal meaning
frozen + summit + oolong
Definition#
Oolong first made around Dongding hill in Lugu Township, Nantou, and now a style: medium-oxidized, cloth-ball rolled into tight balls and medium-roasted, which TRES classes as 焙香型球形烏龍茶 (roasted-aroma ball oolong). The technique has spread to Zhushan, Mingjian and other areas, so 'Dong Ding' on a label may mean the style rather than the place (region id dong-ding).

Common confusions#
- Place vs style: TRES notes the method spread beyond Lugu; origin is only guaranteed by the Lugu farmers' association competition seals or the origin label.
- The story that 林鳳池 brought Wuyi seedlings in 1855 is presented in zh.wikipedia as one account resting on a 2005 book and a 2008 local publication; 連橫's 1908 臺灣通史 describes the local tea (水沙連之茶) without it.
