Character#
Tight dark-green to brown balls; amber to orange liquor (the Lugu office says 橙黃) with ripe-fruit, honey and roast over a floral base. TRES classes it as roasted ball oolong (焙香型球形烏龍茶), medium oxidation and medium roast.

Taught by 王泰友 and 王德 of Dadaocheng's 福記茶行 (both from Anxi): at Mingjian in 1939, at Dong Ding in 1941. 陳拍收 of Yonglong built a cloth-ball rolling machine in 1973; a bundling machine (束包機) from Mingjian, 1983, moved the shape from half-ball to ball.

Origin accounts and growing areas#
The Lugu Township Office says it began with 軟枝烏龍 brought from Fujian in 1855 by the scholar 林鳳池 and planted on Dong Ding by 林三顯. Chinese Wikipedia gives this as one of several accounts; the others are a 蘇 family growing tea there in the Qianlong era and 連橫's 1908 claim of a native tea.
The Lugu office says Dong Ding is still partly hand-made, mainly from Qingxin Wulong, with deeper oxidation and clear roast. TRES notes that the old villages of 彰雅, 鳳凰 and 永隆 keep Qingxin Wulong, while many farmers have opened gardens on the higher 大崙山.
Competition tea#
In 1976 the Lugu farmers' association held the first Dong Ding fine-tea contest, and entries had to be half-ball shaped. TRES says this made the half-ball shape dominant in central, southern and high-mountain Taiwan. From 1976 to 1985 TRES's 吳振鐸 was chief judge. He steered entries away from heavy roast and reddish liquor toward a golden, fragrant style, which then spread to high-mountain tea.
Lots are judged, ranked and sold in sealed, graded packs: 特等, 頭等, 二等, 三等, 三朵梅花 and 二朵梅花. The 2025 winter contest drew 4,598 entries; 48.76% were not placed and only 15.92% reached a numbered grade.
The 凍頂茶葉生產合作社 runs separate contests, with oolong and new-cultivar divisions and an aged-tea (凍頂老茶) evaluation. Since 2023 the Agriculture and Food Agency has tested the origin of contest teas.
The ball was once looser#
In a research-station essay, Wu Sheng-shun explains that early cloth-ball forming was performed by hand before later shaping machines. Older tea can consequently have a looser appearance than today's tightly formed balls. This is a useful historical clue, not a stand-alone age test. The same essay connects the style to strip Baozhong manufacture and the cloth-wrapping technique associated with Tieguanyin.
Roast is a separate decision#
The station treats Dong Ding as a roasted ball-oolong family. The initial oxidation and shaping stages do not by themselves specify the final roast: compare Taiwan high-mountain oolong for clean-aroma ball tea and Muzha Tieguanyin for another roasting tradition. A dark dry leaf alone cannot establish age, origin or roast history.
