Character#
Green, floral, creamy balls with a pale gold cup and low astringency. TRES links the character to cool, cloudy, short-sun conditions, which lower catechins and raise theanine.

Names and ambiguities#
Famous mountain names on lowland or imported tea
In February 2026 Chiayi prosecutors charged three people with mixing Indonesian Jinxuan and low-elevation Nantou tea with Lishan and Zhangshuhu tea, and selling it in packs printed 阿里山 and 福壽梨山. This is an indictment, not a verdict. The joint audits have found foreign tea in high-priced "Taiwan high-mountain" packs.
Dayuling
Dayuling is a premium name for gardens around the pass on the Ren’ai (Nantou) / Xiulin (Hualien) line, and is listed in the wider Lishan zone. In November 2015 the Forestry Bureau cut down the Songlu tea garden at about 2,650 m, the highest on Dayuling, after a final court ruling returned the forest land to the state. These reports do not show how much other Dayuling tea land has been cleared. A name this closely tied to one pass deserves scrutiny. No TRES page on Dayuling was found.
Notes#
Altitude, style and growing areas#
Taiwan’s research station describes high-mountain oolong as a clean-aroma ball tea. A station article describes gardens above 1,000 m and names the Alishan area, Nantou mountain districts, Lishan and Dayuling. These are descriptions of a tea style and its growing areas, not proof of an individual packet’s elevation or origin.
Place, plant and process#
A high-mountain name describes growing context; Qingxin Wulong and Jinxuan identify plant material, and the clean-aroma ball-oolong designation describes the finished style. The Ministry of Agriculture's specialty-tea booklet recognises that cultivar, climate, manufacture and roasting all affect flavour. Altitude alone therefore does not supply a complete taste description or rank two lots reliably.
Checking provenance#
Cultivar DNA cannot prove Taiwan origin when the same cultivars are grown overseas. The research station distinguishes that test from multi-element geographical discrimination. The named garden, season and producer give context for an individual lot; a claimed altitude applies to that lot, not automatically to every tea sold under the same mountain name.
Road access and leaf shape#
High-mountain tea also has an infrastructure history. Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, pp. 949–951) describes Zhangshuhu’s Xianye tea as formerly made by hand in strips because transporting machinery was difficult before road access improved. With machinery, tighter rolling produced half-ball or ball forms. This is a local historical example of how equipment and transport shaped the product; it does not imply that every high-mountain district followed the same sequence. It also cautions against treating leaf shape as a direct expression of altitude alone.
