Notes#
'Alishan tea' is a trade area rather than one township: it covers gardens in Alishan Township and the neighbouring mountain parts of Meishan, Fanlu and Zhuqi. Meishan's gardens are put at about 900–1,400 m, with Longyan village (龍眼村, about 1,200 m) described as the birthplace of Taiwan high-mountain tea; Shizhuo (石桌, Zhuqi) at about 1,200–1,400 m is known for 'Alishan Zhulu' (阿里山珠露茶) on about 400 ha. Meishan's slopes were turned from fruit and bamboo to high-mountain tea. Main cultivar is 青心烏龍, with 金萱 widely used (English Wikipedia associates Jinxuan 'milk oolong' with Alishan). Alishan Township is the traditional territory of the Tsou people; Chashan village (茶山村, 'tea mountain') is a Tsou-area village known for its pavilions. Note: the botanical name 阿里山茶 refers to a different, wild Camellia (C. transarisanensis), not to Alishan tea.
