Notes#

In the Japanese era the Sun Moon Lake area's growing conditions were compared with Assam's, and Assam plants arrived in 1925. A black-tea trial branch was founded at Shuishe in 1936; Taiwanese black tea exports peaked in 1934. Labour costs hit hand-picking after 1971 and the industry shrank. Post-war the station released 台茶8號 (Assam-derived, named 1973), 台茶18號 紅玉 (1999; per English Wikipedia a cross of assamica with a Taiwan native tea) and 台茶21號 紅韻 (2008). After the 1999 earthquake the township office launched an Assam black-tea festival (2003) to rebuild the trade; 'Sun Moon Lake black tea' as a name was coined in 1978 by Nantou magistrate 劉裕猷. Gardens lie at about 500–800 m.
