Names and ambiguities#

Who brought Tieguanyin, and when

The Taiwan Tieguanyin article credits both 張迺妙 and 張迺乾 with bringing plants in 1895; Zhang Naimiao's biography gives 12 plants in 1895, 1,000 in 1896, and an undated purchase of 3,000 with 張迺乾. The general Taiwan tea article simply places the brothers' introduction in the Japanese era (which began in 1895).

Notes#

Zhang Naimiao (張迺妙, 1875–1955) is credited with bringing Tieguanyin from Anxi: 12 plants in 1895 and 1,000 more in 1896; with fellow villager 張迺乾 he also bought 3,000 Tieguanyin plants at the request of the Muzha district head (year not given). He won first prize for Baozhong at the 1916 Taiwan industrial exhibition and returned to Anxi in 1937 to learn processing. In Taiwan, 'Tieguanyin' is made by a cloth-wrapped ball-rolling and slow basket-roasting method; tea from the Tieguanyin cultivar is called 正欉鐵觀音 ('true-stock'), while the same method on other cultivars (硬枝紅心, 金萱, 四季春) is sold simply as 鐵觀音.

The cloth wrapping is said to give a secondary 'fermentation' and a characteristic mineral 'stone-rust' note. Maokong was Taipei's largest tea area; the Taipei Tea Research and Promotion Center (臺北市鐵觀音包種茶研發推廣中心) is there, and the Maokong Gondola (opened 4 July 2007) brought tea-house tourism. Name origin is disputed: potholes in the stream bed, or (翁佳音, 曹銘宗) a valley (khang) of civets (bâ).
