Names and ambiguities#

When did Lin Feng-chi bring the tea?

Wikipedia and the township's product page give 1855 (Wikipedia frames it as one account); the township office's own historical timeline dates the introduction to Daoguang 11 (about 1831) and lists it under 1800. The story is a local legend; no contemporary document was found.

Garden elevation

The Dong Ding tableland itself is 740–770 m; Wikipedia's Dong Ding oolong article puts the tea areas at 600–1,200 m, and the Taiwan tea article gives about 500–1,000 m.

Notes#

Dong Ding oolong is made mainly from 青心烏龍. After rolling, the leaf is wrapped in cloth into a ball and kneaded while warm (熱團揉), by hand or with cloth-ball rolling machines, and spread out from time to time to cool before re-wrapping, which gives the half-ball shape; it is then roasted. Wikipedia classes it as a more heavily oxidised semi-fermented tea, and the township office describes deeper oxidation and an amber-orange liquor. The name now covers tea from much of Lugu and beyond (tea areas at 600–1,200 m), not just the tableland. Legend (not documented history): the Lugu scholar Lin Feng-chi (林鳳池), sponsored by Lin San-xian (林三顯), passed the provincial exam in Fujian and brought back 36 Qingxin oolong seedlings from the Wuyi mountains, 12 of which were planted by Lin San-xian near today's Qilin Pond (麒麟潭) in Yonglong village. Sources disagree on the date (see ambiguities).
