Notes#

Wenshan Baozhong (文山包種茶) is a lightly oxidised, twisted-strip (not ball-rolled) oolong prized for its floral aroma — Wikipedia gives 7–13% 'fermentation' and says stronger aroma means higher grade. Its history: Anxi-style tea packed in square paper parcels gave Baozhong its name; scented Baozhong was first made in Fuzhou from Taiwanese leaf after 1873, finished in Taipei from 1881, and Nangang growers trained farmers from 1885, after which the Wenshan hills (Shiding, Pinglin, Shenkeng, Xindian, Muzha, Jingmei) became the largest Baozhong area.

Pinglin covers 170.83 km², spans about 160–1,100 m (average about 500 m), and its gardens lie mostly at 400–500 m on slightly acidic, well-drained soil. The district museum says tea gardens cover nearly 1,000 ha and over 80% of residents are tea farmers. Japanese-era Pinglin tea went mostly to Southeast Asia. The Pinglin Tea Museum (坪林茶業博物館, New Taipei City), a Minnan Anxi-style courtyard complex of nearly 3 ha, opened in January 1997. Pinglin also makes a local Oriental Beauty-type tea (called 紅茶 locally per Wikipedia).
