Notes#
A place with several cultivars#
The scenic-area authority names TTES 8, Hongyu (TTES 18) and Hongyun (TTES 21) among the area’s black teas. Sun Moon Lake therefore identifies a regional tradition, rather than one cultivar or a single flavour profile.
Garden and plant are separate facts#
Yuchi and neighbouring Puli are identified in the authority’s account of the regional black-tea industry. A cultivar name alone does not establish the garden behind a tea: Hongyu grown elsewhere is still Hongyu, but that does not make it Sun Moon Lake tea.
Several finished leaf forms#
The regional name has not always meant only a long-leaf specialty tea. Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, p. 951) lists strip-style Gongfu tea, cut graded tea and broken black tea among the area’s products. This historical range adds a manufacturing dimension to the separate question of cultivar. For an individual Sun Moon Lake tea, the plant material and the finished leaf form are both useful details; neither can be inferred from the regional name alone.
