competition tea
Literal meaning
competition + tea
Definition#
In Taiwan, tea entered in a judged contest run by a farmers' association (農會) or similar body; lots that place are repacked by the organiser in uniform, sealed packaging printed with the grade (特等, 頭等, then lower ranks down to 三梅 and 二梅) and returned to the farmer to sell. Lugu's contest, first held on 2 May 1976, draws about 6,000 entries a year; its winter 2025 round had 4,598 entries, of which 48.76 % did not place.

Common confusions#
- Different from the mainland 茶王赛 (chawangsai), many of which are brand-run; in Taiwan the association itself seals the lot.
- Placement is common (about half of Lugu winter 2025 entries placed), so a 二梅 or 三梅 seal is a modest guarantee of origin and soundness rather than of excellence.
