orchid aroma

Literal meaning

'orchid-flower aroma'

Definition#

A fresh, delicate floral aroma described as orchid-like, used in Chinese vendor and press descriptions of oolong teas, above all Anxi Tieguanyin and related Minnan cultivars. A Jiemian article on look-alike cultivars (reprinted from 茶语网, 2017-09-21) writes of Tieguanyin as '清香显兰花香' (a clean fragrance showing the orchid note), Benshan as '清香略带兰花香', Maoxie '兰花香不明显', Jin Guanyin '略显兰花香' and Huangjin Gui as having sweet floral notes (orchid, osmanthus). It is a family of notes rather than a measured compound. It is distinct from the dancong aroma types 芝兰香 and 蜜兰香. Scenting tea with flowers (窨制) is a different process.
