Qizhong
Literal meaning
remarkable/rare + kind
Definition#
A traditional yancha product category made from seed-grown Wuyi 'caicha' bushes rather than named clones. The 2026 standard reportedly states explicitly that it is made from sexually propagated Wuyi caicha, giving these landrace populations formal recognition. Historically the word also ranked teas above ordinary 'xiaozhong'.

Common confusions#
- Translated as 'rare variety' or 'rare breeds' (EU GI), implying scarcity rather than seed origin.
- Babelcarp describes 奇种 as a catch-all class for Wuyi cultivars other than the best-known ones, usually miscellaneous seedling stock (杂种). That is an older trade sense, beside the 2026 standard's definition (sexually propagated caicha).
- GB/T 18745-2026 (term 3.7) defines 奇种 as yancha made from fresh leaf of the seed-propagated (有性繁殖) Wuyi caicha.
