群体种群體種
Term · Cultivars
seed-grown population variety
Literal meaning
'population variety'; seed-grown landrace
Definition#
A tea variety that is propagated by seed, so every plant is slightly different. A Hunan Federation of Supply and Marketing Cooperatives page (2023-08-29) defines 有性系品种 (also 有性繁殖系品种, 'popularly called 群体种') as a variety formed by long natural and artificial selection and propagated by seed. The counterpart is 无性系 (clonal cultivars). A 群体种 is cultivated, not a wild tree.

Common confusions#
- Not 'wild' (野生茶) and not 'ancient' (古树): it says how the plant was propagated.
- Opposite of 无性系 (clonal cultivar), the dominant planting stock in China: the same page says the proportion of clonal improved varieties reached 60.94 % at the end of 2017 (figure attributed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs; the page says 'proportion', not 'of tea area').
