Translations and trade names
  • MangbeiSpelling on Yoshi en's Lincang organic sheng and shou pages (terroir 'Mangbei, Lincang', 1,500-1,800 m). No place called Mangbei was found in Lincang. Mangfei is the likeliest reading, since its gardens lie at 1,500-2,000 m, but the vendor names no county or village, so this is unconfirmed. Mangbang (忙蚌), on the east half of Mengku, is the other near-homophone.

Names and ambiguities#

'Mangbei' on vendor pages

Yoshi en gives the terroir of several organic Lincang teas as 'Mangbei, Lincang' at 1,500-1,800 m, without characters, county or village. No place called Mangbei was found. Mangfei (忙肺, Yongde) fits the altitude; Mangbang (忙蚌, east Mengku) is another near-homophone. Until the vendor confirms the characters, treat 'Mangbei' as 'somewhere in Lincang'.

Notes#

Mangfei administrative village has five natural villages and eleven villager groups over 18.28 km². Its tea is made from the Mengban Mangfei large-leaf population (勐板忙肺大叶群体种), named by a provincial germplasm survey team in 1980; most old trees are around a century old. A trade account dates written records to Ming Hongwu 17 (1384) and says gardens were heavily pruned (台刈) from the mid-1980s to about 2000. Figures vary by source: 2,850 mu and about 531 households, with 1,200 mu newly planted in 2017 (trade, 2018); 5,800+ mu, 541 households and about 375 t of maocha a year worth over 35 million yuan (Science and Technology Daily, 2024); 5,900+ mu and 750 t of maocha in 2024 worth over 90 million yuan (Yunnan Net, 2025). The tea is described as strong and thick with a high aroma, and has long been valued by pu'er buyers in Taiwan. 'Yongde Mangfei tea' was added to the third national list of famous, special and new agricultural products in 2024.
