Notes#
Bangwei is a village of Fudong township in Lancang Lahu Autonomous County. Its fame rests on one tree, described as a transitional type (过渡型) between wild and cultivated tea: 11.8 m tall, crown 8.2 × 9 m, trunk 1.14 m across at the base. Tea experts reported it in 1991; in 1993 over 180 tea scientists from nine countries studied and endorsed it, and in 1997 the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications put it on the 'Tea tree' (《茶树》) stamp. A trade account says the Wei family who owned it sold it to the government for 2,600 yuan. The tree yields about 15 kg a year and is still picked; in 2017, 500 g of its sun-dried leaf sold for 180,000 yuan at the 15th China Pu'er Tea Festival. People's Daily Online (2016) gives the village 780 households, over 3,000 'acres' of tea and about 700 'acres' of old trees with trunks over 10 cm (probably mu). OpenStreetMap places the tree about 0.5 km north-west of the village node.
