Picking calendar#

春茶

Mar 1 – Apr 30

March-April is the main and busiest season. Picking and processing are still largely by hand, with sun-drying on terraces.

Terroir#

Slope and light
Tea forests run from about 1,250 m to the summit (People's Daily account). The mountain spans about 1,000-1,700 m (Yunnan tourism office), and averages are given as about 1,400 m (People's Daily) or 1,500 m (Lancang county). Mist is frequent.

Cultivation#

Cultivars grown
Yunnan large-leaf
Plant age
Inscribed forests: over 1.2 million old trees, mostly 2-5 m tall (China News Service). People's Daily gives 3.2 million+ for the wider 2.8万亩.
Practice
Under-forest tea (林下茶): selective thinning of the canopy, tea planted beneath, no fertiliser or pesticide. In autumn seed is replanted in forest gaps.

People#

Blang 布朗族
Mangjing administrative village (five heritage villages including Wengji). The Blang hold the Pa'aileng tea-ancestor tradition.
Dai 傣族
Jingmai administrative village (four heritage villages including Jingmai Dazhai and Nuogang).
Hani 哈尼族
Named among the long-resident groups.
Wa 佤族
Named among the long-resident groups.
Lahu 拉祜族
One of the five groups represented by the offering posts at the tea-soul platform.

Market#

Misnaming to watch for: 'Jingmai' is used loosely for Jingmai village (Dai), Mangjing (Blang) and plantation tea on the lower slopes. 2.8万亩 old garden versus about 1,180 ha inscribed forest is a common confusion.

History#

  1. 950About the 10th century: Blang ancestors (later also Dai, 10th-14th c.) settle Jingmai and begin cultivating wild tea (approximate).
  2. 2010World Heritage nomination first proposed.
  3. 2012Added to China's World Heritage tentative list.
  4. 2013-03-05Listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit (7th batch).
  5. 2023-09-17Inscribed as a World Heritage cultural landscape at the 45th session (Riyadh).

A landscape that works together#

UNESCO describes Jingmai as a managed relationship between forests, tea groves and villages, sustained by Blang and Dai communities. The three layers below explain that relationship; they are not a map or a scale drawing.

  1. Forest

Surrounding and partition forests form part of the protected landscape.

  2. Tea beneath the canopy

Understorey tea cultivation responds to the mountain environment and local ecological knowledge.

  3. Villages and shared care

Community governance and cultural practices help sustain the landscape and its resources.

World Heritage recognition concerns the cultural landscape. It does not certify the origin, growing method or quality of an individual tea for sale.

Names and ambiguities#

Mangjing listed as an alias

Mangjing (芒景) is a village group on Jingmai Mountain, not another name for it. Treating it as an alias hides a distinction some vendors draw between Dai Jingmai and Blang Mangjing. Consider splitting it into its own entity.

Inscription criteria

UNESCO’s official property record confirms criteria (iii) and (v). The Chinese Wikipedia infobox gives (ii) and (v); the UNESCO record resolves this discrepancy.

312

Area of old tea forest

Reported as 2.8万亩 (People's Daily, 《文明》), 1.8万亩 contiguous (The Paper), about 1,180 ha (China News Service, zh Wikipedia) and 1,230.63 ha (People's Daily app). The 1,180-1,230 ha figures refer to the five inscribed forests. 2.8万亩 is the commonly cited total.

Notes#

The World Heritage site 'Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of the Jingmai Mountain in Pu'er' was inscribed on 17 September 2023 at the 45th session in Riyadh. It is China's 57th World Heritage site and the first with a tea theme. The property covers 7,167.89 ha with an 11,927.85 ha buffer zone. It contains five old tea forests, nine traditional villages and three forest belts that separate the tea forests.

The heritage zone covers two administrative villages, Jingmai (mainly Dai: Mangeng, Mengben, Jingmai Dazhai, Nuogang) and Mangjing (mainly Blang: Wengji, Mangjing Shangzhai and Xiazhai, Manghong, Wengwa), about 1,231 households and 5,088 people. Ancestors of the Blang and Dai settled here between the 10th and 14th centuries. They thinned the forest and planted tea under the canopy (林下茶), without fertiliser or pesticide. The result is a layered landscape: water-source forest on the summit, tea forest and villages mid-slope, and fields below. Blang tradition makes Pa'aileng (帕哎冷) the ancestor who led the people here and left them tea.

Each tea forest keeps a 'tea soul tree' (茶魂树), and the Blang worship at a tea-soul platform (茶魂台) during the April Shankang tea-ancestor festival. The figure '2.8万亩' (about 1,870 ha) is widely quoted for the old tea gardens as a whole and is larger than the inscribed forests.
