- City-seat climate (Linxiang): subtropical highland. 1981-2010 normals give 1,148.9 mm of rain; the article text gives 1,161.8 mm and a 17.2 °C annual mean. Tea villages range from about 750 m (Xigui, on the Lancang) to 2,200-2,750 m (the Mengku Daxueshan wild tea population).

History#
- 1747The Mengmian chieftaincy becomes Mianning Ting (缅宁厅).
- 1954Mianning County renamed Lincang County.
- 2003-12-26State Council replaces Lincang Prefecture (地区) with the prefecture-level city; Lincang County becomes Linxiang District (formally established 2004).

Names and ambiguities#
Lincang as city vs. tea region
In tea usage, 'Lincang' often means 'not Banna': a broad style family (Mengku, Bingdao, Xigui, Yongde, Fengqing). In administrative usage it is a specific city, Lincang District until 2003. 'Lincang tea' on a label is a very wide origin claim.
Notes#
All eight county-level units of Lincang lie inside the pu'er GI area (Linxiang, Fengqing, Yun, Yongde, Zhenkang, Shuangjiang, Gengma, Cangyuan). The trade treats the prefecture as several separate tea zones. The Mengku area of Shuangjiang (Bingdao, the 'west and east half-mountains') is the best known. Bangdong and Xigui in Linxiang sit on the Lancang River side, and Yongde and Fengqing to the north and west are known for Dianhong as well as pu'er. Young Lincang raw pu'er is often described as greener and more bitter than Banna tea. The Xiaguan factory's blends historically drew heavily on Lincang leaf. The prefecture's highest point is 3,504 m.
