Before 2018, Shoumei had no national product standard. A 2018 explainer says such tea was labelled grade 2 White Peony or new-craft white tea, so older labels may not say 'Shoumei' at all.

Character#
Open leaves with relatively few buds, ranging from grey-green to brown. Leaf appearance and cup colour vary with the raw material, processing and storage; a leafier tea need not have a weak taste.

Grades and changing definitions#
Shoumei was added to the national standard in the 2017 revision, with grades 一级 and 二级. en-Wikipedia describes it as grown mostly in Fujian and Guangxi and calls it a by-product of Silver Needle production; that framing predates the 2017 cultivar-based definition. The Fuding GI specification registered with the EU does not list Shoumei. The Fuding association draft standard does. Pressed Shoumei cakes are a common choice for long storage.
Pressing, ageing and fair comparisons#
A Zhejiang University study followed Zhenghe Shoumei through pressing and compared moist-heat treatments of four white-tea types. Chemical and sensory changes were not uniform across the products. This matters when comparing loose and cake tea: compression is not simply a change of packaging, and a cake’s pressing year need not be its leaf-harvest year. Laboratory antioxidant results in the study are not evidence of a health benefit from drinking the tea.
When judging an aged cake against a young loose tea, form and treatment have changed as well as age. Ask for harvest year, pressing date and storage information before attributing the entire difference to ageing.
