History#
- 621Jianzhou (建州) prefecture set up (Tang, Wude 4); its later seat is Jian'an (today's Jian'ou).
- 1162Jianzhou raised to Jianning prefecture (建宁府).
- 1391Imperial order to send tribute tea as loose leaf ends cake production at the Northern Park (北苑) estate in Jian'ou, the Song emperors' main tea source.
- 2014-05State Council approves moving the Nanping municipal seat from Yanping to Jianyang (completed 2020).

Notes#
Nanping covers northern Fujian (闽北) at the meeting point of Fujian, Zhejiang and Jiangxi. It is the province's largest prefecture-level city (26,280 km², 21.2% of Fujian) and has 2 districts, 3 county-level cities and 5 counties. Relief is steep: 12.09% of the land lies above 1,000 m, 44.03% at 500–1,000 m, 21.38% at 300–500 m and 22.50% below 300 m. Huanggangshan (2,160.8 m), the highest peak in Fujian, is on its border.
Tea: the 2025 statistical bulletin gives 105,800 t of tea (+5.3%) and 25,612 t of refined tea from above-scale enterprises. Inside Nanping are Wuyishan (yancha, Lapsang souchong / Jin Jun Mei at Tongmu), Jianyang (origin of the Shuixian cultivar, Jianyang white tea), Jian'ou (Minbei Shuixian, the Song-era Northern Park tribute-tea site, Aijiao Wulong), Zhenghe (white tea) and Songxi (Jiulong Dabai).
The municipal government moved from Yanping district to Jianyang district. The State Council approved this in 2014 and the move was completed in 2020. The coordinates below mark the historic Yanping urban area.
