Character#

The finished tea's floral, fruity and roasted impressions depend on manufacture. Pale fresh leaves do not prescribe one roast level or guarantee a green-looking infusion.

Names and ambiguities#

Origin site

Chinese brand guides place the original bush at Wai Guidong (外鬼洞, 'outer Ghost Cave'). An English overview instead associates it with the foot of Huoyan (Flame) Peak and the Huiyuan area. Its pale yellow-green leaf, unusual among Wuyi cultivars, is often given as the reason for the name, but the competing legends are not settled.

Notes#

Pale leaves are a physiological trait#

Wu and colleagues found that strong light produced yellow leaves, reduced chlorophyll and altered chloroplast structure in Baijiguan, while shading led towards greener leaves. That experiment concerns the living plant, not a rule for finished-tea colour.

Category comes from manufacture#

The leaf is made through the Wuyi oolong route, including withering, agitation, fixation and drying or roasting. Compare Anji white tea for another case in which a pale-leaf cultivar has a name that can mislead readers about processing category. Bai Jiguan holds the botanical identity.
