Picking calendar#

春茶

May 1 – May 15

The single main yancha harvest. Approximate. Xinhua reports Wuyishan entering the key picking and primary-processing season 'since May' (photos 2–10 May in 2025 and 7–9 May in 2026). The Da Hong Pao GI dossier says leaves are picked in the first ten days of May, i.e. around Lixia (立夏, 5–6 May). Opening ceremonies (喊山 / 开山) mark the start. Exact dates vary by year, cultivar and site (inference).

焙火 / 精制

Refining and charcoal roasting follow the spring season. Yancha is usually roasted at least twice, 6–10 h per session, with at least 10 days to half a month between rounds; one charcoal firing cycle lasts 7–10 days. A Jiemian column says good tea should not be roasted before October, needs one to two months for the 'fire' to fade, and reaches the market after the Mid-Autumn Festival. Dates vary by producer.

Terroir#

Rock
Danxia landform of red sandstone and conglomerate cliffs, with volcanic conglomerate and shale. The GI dossier counts 36 peaks, 99 cliffs, the Nine Bends, Chongyang and Huangbai streams, 9 brooks and 13 springs.
Soil
Acidic red soils (红壤) weathered from volcanic conglomerate, red sandstone and shale. Topsoil is rich in organic matter, pH 5–6. In zhengyan pockets, rock fragments can exceed half the soil.
Slope and light
Most yancha gardens sit in gullies, pits and small terraces below about 500 m, sheltered by surrounding hills from cold northern air and strong sun (GI dossier). Climate figures vary by source and station: 1991–2020 normals at 222 m give 18.7 °C and 1,967 mm with 160 rain days and 1,589 h sunshine. The city gives 1,926.9 mm rain, 1,629.5 h sunshine and 270 frost-free days (range 237–307). The GI dossier gives 18–18.5 °C, about 2,000 mm and 80% relative humidity. Chinese Wikipedia gives 17 °C and 1,894 mm.

Cultivation#

Cultivars grown
RouguiShuixianQidanShui Jin GuiTie LuohanBai JiguanBan Tian YaoBeidou
Landraces
Seed-grown 菜茶 (caicha) population, called Qizhong (奇种) when processed. Its natural hybridisation is the source of the named bushes. Local tea annals list more than 264 varieties; farmers speak of over 800, and Chinese Wikipedia of over 300.
Practice
Clonal propagation of selected bushes. Primary processing: withering (sun or indoor), shaking and spreading (做青), pan-firing, rolling, then charcoal baking (first baking, cooling, re-baking). Refining: grading, screening, picking, blending, drying and packing, all inside the GI area. By 2026 about 90% of gardens (132,600 of 148,000 mu) were converted to 'green ecological' management with cover crops.

A famous benchmark: in November 2002, 20 g of Da Hong Pao from the mother bushes sold for 180,000 yuan at the Guangzhou tea fair. The city's whole tea chain was worth 17 bn yuan in 2025 (+13.3%).
Misnaming to watch for: Under the GI, any tea grown and made inside Wuyishan City, including zhoucha and high 'ecological' gardens, may be sold as Wuyi yancha. 'Zhengyan', 'banyan' and pit names carry no legal guarantee. Chinese Wikipedia notes that some traders scent zhoucha and pass it off as better tea.

Names and ambiguities#

Wuyishan City vs. Wuyi Mountains vs. Scenic Area

'Wuyishan' can mean the county-level city (Chong'an County until 1989), the Wuyi mountain range, which extends along the Fujian–Jiangxi border well beyond the city, or the much smaller scenic/heritage area. The yancha GI follows the city boundary, the DHP certification mark follows part of the scenic area, and connoisseur 'zhengyan' talk follows the rocky core.

Where 'Bohea' comes from

The sources (Wiktionary, Wikipedia after Mair & Hoh) derive 'Bohea' from the Hokkien (Southern Min) Bú-î, the form used by the Xiamen traders who sold Wuyi tea after 1684. The local Northern Min (Jian'ou) reading is Ǔ-ǐ, without the b- initial, so 'Bohea' does not reflect Minbei speech. The local Chong'an/Wuyishan dialect reading was not found.

19202123

Climate figures differ by source

Annual mean temperature is given as 17 °C (zh Wikipedia text), 18–18.5 °C (GI dossier) and 18.7 °C (1991–2020 normals at the 222 m city station). Rainfall is given as 1,894, 1,926.9, about 2,000 and 1,967.2 mm. The Da Hong Pao dossier's '12–13 °C' and '>2,000 mm' apply to the scenic area at best, and the temperature looks doubtful. The entry uses the station normals.

Notes#

"Bohea", the historic English name for Wuyi tea, comes from a dialect pronunciation of Wuyi. Terroir is graded by distance from the rocky core of the scenic area — see terroir_class on child regions. Typical tiers used in the trade: zhengyan (正岩, "true rock") — inside the core scenic area banyan (半岩, "half rock") — the edges of the scenic area zhoucha (洲茶) — flatter riverside / lowland gardens within Wuyishan waishan (外山, "outside mountain") — outside the GI area; not legally Wuyi yancha The boundaries between tiers are trade usage rather than legally defined lines; sources disagree on exact borders.
