Names and ambiguities#

Huiyuan pit vs. Huiyuan factory, and Guidong

TeaDB warns not to confuse Huiyuan Keng with a processing factory also called Huiyuan. Guidong (Ghost Cave) is treated by some as part of greater Huiyuan and by others as its own place, which affects origin claims for Tieluohan and Bai Jiguan.

Notes#

Community translations of Chinese sources describe Huiyuankeng as a large basin, much bigger than Niulankeng, with the oldest named-bush gardens. Its water starts at Zhangtangjian and runs through the pit. Being deep and long, it gets short sunshine, frequent cloud and mist, and much diffuse light. Shuixian, Rougui and many named bushes grow here. In the broad sense Zhangtangjian, Tianchajia, Feilai Peak, Yingzui Rock, Zhuhu, Gujing and Guidong are counted as part of it. TeaDB records Tie Luohan as first produced in Fengke Pit (蜂窠坑) of Huiyuan Rock and Bai Jiguan at the foot of Flame Peak (火焰峰) in Huiyuan Rock; other lists put both in Guidong. TeaDB warns not to confuse the place with the Huiyuan yancha factory.

Huiyuan Temple (慧苑寺) stands on the slow trail between Shuiliandong and the Da Hong Pao trees and is a Wuyishan municipal protected heritage site.
