Term · Terroir
zhengyan
Literal meaning
proper/true + rock
Definition#
The core terroir class of Wuyi rock tea: tea grown inside the rocky heart of the Wuyishan scenic area, among cliffs and ravines with stony, weathered soils. Traditionally it meant the valleys along the Nine-Bend Stream (九曲溪); today it is often equated loosely with the roughly 70 km² scenic area. It is a trade category, not a legally mapped zone in the 2006 GI standard.

Common confusions#
- Boundaries are contested: TeaForum and Jiemian describe the original zhengyan as the Nine-Bend Stream valleys, while later usage and many vendors equate it with the whole scenic area.
- Russian shops sometimes write «Чжень Янь» (moychay), as if from 真岩 'genuine rock'; the term is 正 zhèng.
- Vendors print 'zhengyan' on far more tea than the area can produce; treat it as a claim.
- GB 18745-2002 legally split Wuyi rock tea into a 名岩产区 (the Wuyishan scenic area, 70 km², bounded by Chongyang Stream, Nanxing road, Gaoxing road and Huangbai Stream) and a 丹岩产区 (the rest). GB/T 18745-2006 abolished this split and protects the whole of Wuyishan city. The '70 km² zhengyan' figure therefore echoes the 2002 名岩 zone, not any current legal zone.
