洲茶
Term · Terroir
zhoucha
Literal meaning
river-islet/sandbar + tea
Definition#
Wuyishan tea grown on the flat alluvial land along the rivers and streams (Chongyang, Huangbai and Jiuqu streams) rather than on rocky slopes. 洲 means a sandbar or river flat, and the name marks it as the lowest of the classic Wuyi terroir tiers inside the GI area. Such tea is generally sold without zhengyan or banyan claims.

Common confusions#
- English vendors translate it as 'outer zone', blurring it with waishan.
- Russian TeaTerra writes «Жоу Ча», a pinyin-to-Cyrillic misreading.
- Some tiers place zhoucha 'within old Chong'an county but outside the mountain' (Jiemian) while others define it purely by alluvial soil (iTeaworld); both describe the same lowland belt.
