Names and ambiguities#

Where Tieluohan comes from

Sources disagree on the original bush. Some place it in Huiyuan Keng, some in Guidong (Ghost Cave), and some in Zhuke. One English vendor overview says 'originally from Fengke Pit'. Guidong is sometimes treated as part of Huiyuan 'in a broad sense', which makes the dispute partly about boundaries.

Tieluohan as a south-Fujian trade name

Chinese accounts say the Shi Jiquan (施集泉) tea shop in Hui'an, southern Fujian, founded 1781, sold Wuyi rock tea under the name 'Tieluohan' as its top product and promoted it as medicinal. So the name circulated in Minnan trade as a product name, not necessarily as the single cultivar now grown in Wuyi. I found no reliable evidence that Anxi uses 'Tieluohan' for a separate local tea. Claims that it is an Anxi tea look like confusion with Tieguanyin.

Notes#

Earlier within the comparison#

A 2012 botanical evaluation placed Tie Luohan among the earlier spring-picking selections in its ten-mingcong collection, in contrast to Shui Jin Gui and Ban Tian Yao. Weather and garden still determine a particular year's harvest.

The name does not set the roast#

Tie Luohan identifies the selection; it does not require every finished tea to be heavily roasted. Comparing Shui Jin Gui at a similar roast helps distinguish cultivar differences, while maker, garden and harvest provide further context for a tasting note.
