Names and ambiguities#

Founding date: 1644, 1819, 1978/1982 or 2000?

China.com.cn (2024) and Fujian Daily (2022) date the family's tea history to 1644. China.com.cn and Chamen date the 瑞泉 trade name to 1819. Chamen says the works closed in 1949 and were revived in 1978; China.com.cn dates the revival to 1982. Chamen dates the modern company to 2000 (after Huang Shenghui took over in 1999). All of these are family and company accounts. No independent record of the 1819 house was found, and no source for the year 1858 sometimes quoted was found. A registry date for the current legal entity was not confirmed.

Heritage status of Huang Shengliang (黄圣亮)

Chamen says he became a national bearer of the Wuyi yancha (Dahongpao) craft in 2006. China.com.cn calls him one of the 'first batch' bearers. Fujian Daily (2022) calls him a provincial bearer. The national project page on ihchina lists only 王顺明, 叶启桐 and 陈德华 as national bearers. The 2006 'first batch' refers to the craft's listing in 2006, not to individual bearers. The best-supported reading is provincial bearer.

Legal entity name

Fujian Daily (2022) names 武夷山瑞泉茶业有限公司. China.com.cn (2024) names 福建省瑞泉茶产业有限公司. These may be separate or successive entities. 黄圣辉 heads the business; no source checked lists him as a heritage bearer.

Notes#

The name comes from 瑞泉岩 (Ruiquan Rock) at Shuiliandong in the scenic area, where the family says its ancestors lived. In the family account, ancestor 彦捷公 came to the area in 1644. Chamen says he moved to 洋庄 in Chong'an, while Fujian Daily says he was already making yancha under Ruiquan Rock. Ancestor 定静公 opened the 瑞泉 tea house in 1819 and traded between Chong'an and Qianshan in Jiangxi. Tenth-generation 黄瑞喜 is described as a noted tea maker who later made tea for a production team. Chamen says he was sent to Anxi in 1955 to teach Wuyi oolong methods. Chamen says the works closed in 1949.

Eleventh-generation 黄贤义 revived the 瑞泉 name in 1978 (Chamen) or 1982 (China.com.cn) and opened a tea room at Shuiliandong. Twelfth-generation 黄圣辉 took over in 1999 and turned it into a modern company around 2000, with his brothers 黄圣亮 (tea making) and 黄圣强 (marketing). Later milestones in company-sourced accounts: a traditional-craft research institute (2005), the 瑞泉岩茶博物馆 museum (2010), a Dahongpao research centre with Shenyang Pharmaceutical University (2014), and a 10-year lease on 133 mu of zhengyan gardens for 74 million yuan (2020).

Chamen also says it was named a 福建老字号 (Fujian time-honoured brand) in the sixth batch in March 2022; this was not confirmed in an official list. The company says it holds several hundred mu of zhengyan gardens, including Shuiliandong, 九龙窠, 马头岩, 倒水坑 and 虎啸岩. In 2022 Huang Shenghui took part, as vice-president of the 海峡两岸茶业交流协会, in filming for the 'Chinese tea' UNESCO nomination.
