Yunnan white tea associated especially with Jinggu, with contrasting pale down and darker leaf surfaces. A local specification defines Moonlight White; wider trade use is less precise.
Silvery bud hairs contrast with darker leaf surfaces. In a 2022 university study, three Moonlight White samples brewed pale yellow, apricot-yellow or orange-yellow, with fresh, mellow flavours. Those observations describe the tested teas; they do not establish a fixed flavour or low bitterness for every Moonlight White.
Material varies with the declared product specification. The 2022 Jinggu association standard defines Yue Guang Bai primarily from a bud with two leaves; wider-market products need not follow this local specification.
The Jinggu standard describes withering before drying. Shade-spreading accounts explain some local practices, but neither the name nor the standard definition requires picking or drying by moonlight.
Drying follows withering; the exact equipment and handling should be described by the producer. Finished tea can be sorted and sold loose or pressed.

Yunnan Agricultural University studies analyse Moonlight White within white tea, and the 2022 Jinggu association standard explicitly calls its defined product white tea. Broader trade use of the name can cover differing material and handling. The name alone does not make a tea Pu-er, black tea or a unique seventh category.
GB/T 22291-2017 defines its four products by Dabai, Shuixian or group cultivars, and none of them is Moonlight White. Moonlight White is made from Yunnan large-leaf plants and is not one of the four products, so the national white-tea standard does not name it. The Jinggu association standard names Moonlight White separately.
The 2022 Jinggu text ties Yue Guang Bai to Jinggu-grown Jinggu Dabai plant material, primarily a bud with two leaves. “Moonlight White” on an unrelated vendor listing does not establish compliance with that specification. The association proposed a revised grading system in May 2026, so the specification edition and label date matter.
T/JGCYXH 001-2022 defines Jinggu Dabai white tea from local plant material and distinguishes Bai Long Xu, Yue Meiren, Yue Guang Bai and Yue Guang Shou by raw material. Its Yue Guang Bai definition uses primarily a bud with two leaves. These are separate product categories in the text, not simply interchangeable aliases.
Jinggu’s official May 2026 report says the association approved a proposal to divide Bai Long Xu, Yue Meiren and Yue Guang Bai into six grades in total, absorbing Yue Guang Shou into Yue Guang Bai. The same report says technical review, public notice, filing and formal publication were still to follow. The final revised text and implementation date have not been verified here; older labels should not be judged retrospectively by the proposal.
A 2022 university study included several Yunnan white teas labelled Moonlight White and a separate Jinggu bud-only tea. That sample diversity is useful evidence of market usage, not proof that every product shares one cultivar, leaf standard or drying method.
