Notes#

Repeated pan work and fire control#

Ya’an describes the traditional craft through repeated pan heating and rolling, often summarised as three heatings and three rollings.

The national Mengshan heritage record describes a dedicated huǒdānshī (火丹师) managing the fire while the tea maker handles the leaf. Their decisions depend on season, time since picking and moisture, rather than one fixed heat-and-time formula. The craft's name covers several products, including green teas and Mengding Yellow Buds, so heritage status does not mean they all share one manufacturing route.

How it differs from Mengding Huangya#

Mengding Ganlu is green tea; Mengding Huangya belongs to yellow tea and includes yellowing. Their shared mountain name does not make them the same style.

Ganlu's characteristic curled, downy appearance differs from the straighter buds of Mengding Huangya. Appearance is useful for comparing the styles, but the green-versus-yellow distinction rests on how the leaf is processed.
