Notes#

Why yellowing matters#

The Ya’an account identifies yellowing and control of temperature and humidity as central to this tea. A yellow cultivar or a yellowish cup alone is not the defining criterion.

1

One mountain, several tea styles#

Mengding Ganlu shares the mountain association but is made as green tea. Mengding Huangya has its own yellow-tea process.

The national Mengshan heritage record includes Huangya alongside Ganlu, Shihua and other green teas, while explicitly identifying Huangya as yellow tea. Its described straight, plump, yellow buds contrast with Mengding Ganlu's curled form. The shared regional tradition therefore links the teas historically without making one a grade of the other.

12

Standards and their scope#

The official catalogue lists a separate industry standard for Mengdingshan yellow tea, GH/T 1351-2021. A catalogue record establishes the document and its scope; it does not substitute for reading its full grade tables or prove that a particular retail lot complies.

3

Yellowing between drying stages#

In Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, p. 719), the first warm paper wrapping follows fixation. Further pan work releases water and trapped odours before a second wrapping; a later covered rest redistributes moisture before final shaping. Yellowing is thus interleaved with water removal and shaping, rather than being a single isolated pause. The sequence is a historical craft account, not a fixed schedule for every producer.
