Notes#

Tea identity and regional neighbours#

Tanyang Gongfu is a finished tea style, not a factory, brewing method or single cultivar. The provincial account associates its traditional raw material with Tanyang Caicha.

Tanyang, Bailin and Zhenghe Gongfu are distinct regional traditions. The broad description Fujian black tea does not by itself establish Tanyang origin or the cultivar used.

1

A village name and its historical supply area#

The Ningde gazetteer records Tanyang Gongfu production across Fu'an and several neighbouring counties, principally using Tanyang Caicha. This historical account should not be mistaken for the boundary of a current geographical indication or a claim that every lot comes from Tanyang village.

2

Refining the finished grade#

The provincial agriculture account separates primary withering, rolling, oxidation and drying from later reheating, sieving and hand picking. Refinement can divide the initial tea into grades rather than merely tidy its appearance. Comparing Bailin Gongfu and Zhenghe Gongfu brings out differences in regional plant material within the related Minhong traditions.

3

Blending across terrain and seasons#

Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, pp. 384–385) describes historical Tanyang Gongfu as a tea assembled across contrasting growing environments. It associates inland mountain material with fuller taste and sustained aroma, and coastal hill material with finer appearance and a fresher taste, then explains how refinement combined origins and spring, summer and autumn production to maintain a consistent finished character. In that account, blending is part of the craft, not evidence of an inferior product. These historical supply patterns do not establish a current protected boundary or the composition of a particular lot.
