Notes#

Regional identity and shared plant material#

The provincial government identifies Bailin as the birthplace of Bailin Gongfu black tea. The agriculture department places it alongside Tanyang and Zhenghe in the three Minhong Gongfu traditions.

Bailin is a place-linked style name, not a synonym for Fuding white tea. The name alone specifies neither one exclusive cultivar nor a universal picking grade.

The Ningde gazetteer associates historical Bailin Gongfu with the Fuding–Taimu area and mainly Fuding Dabai material. The same broad plant lineage is important in local white tea; rolling and enzymatic oxidation direct the leaf into a different finished style here. This is a historical association, not a rule that every modern Bailin lot must be one cultivar.

Several ways to wither#

The gazetteer records indoor, combined sun-and-indoor, and heated-air trough withering in regional black-tea production. 'Traditionally made' consequently needs a more specific explanation than a single assumed equipment choice. Compare White tea and Tanyang Gongfu for related raw material and a neighbouring black-tea tradition.

Protecting the downy buds#

The Bailin entry in Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, p. 386) makes leaf tenderness central to the intended fine, downy appearance. It describes controlled withering, alternating lighter and heavier rolling, prompt loosening of clumps and sieving out already formed leaf before further work. These operations help explain why refining and rolling choices matter alongside cultivar. Its account of the historical Juhong presentation connects orange-red bud hairs and bright liquor with that name; this should not be read as evidence of added orange flavouring or as a specification for every modern Bailin tea.
