Notes#

Yellowing and smoking#

The monograph explicitly classifies this tea as yellow. It describes fixation by steam or pan heat, a warm, moist yellowing stage, gentle rolling, drying and smoking. Shoots are kept relatively intact rather than tightly twisted. The yellowing stage is essential to understanding its category; smoke alone does not make a tea black or dark.

A traditional style, not every Weishan tea#

The 2000 book describes a yellow-orange infusion and a pronounced smoky aroma for the traditional style. A Hunan statistics report separately records one named Weishan Maojian entry winning a yellow-tea award in 2016. That award establishes the category of the entered product, not the processing of every tea sold under the name.
