Notes#
Repeated wrapped yellowing#
The provincial account describes heating, drying and wrapped yellowing stages. Yellowing is a deliberate processing step, not simply a description of pale infusion colour.
The Hunan account places a wrapped rest after the first drying, then another drying and a second wrapped rest before the final bake. The maker adjusts these stages to the leaf's moisture, colour and ambient conditions. The source's timings describe that process; they are not a universal production schedule or a brewing instruction.
A yellow tea with a silver-needle shape#
Junshan Silver Needle is not the white tea Bai Hao Yin Zhen. The shared Silver Needle wording describes appearance; processing and origin distinguish the teas.
Gentle handling aims to preserve straight, plump buds and their down. This gives the tea its needle-like appearance, but its heat fixation and enclosed yellowing distinguish it from Silver Needle. A shared English shape-name should not erase that difference.
A twentieth-century change in picking#
Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, p. 575) dates a change to 1953: instead of removing buds from already-picked shoots, makers began selecting buds directly on the tea plant. It also records a reworking of manufacture that year. The account shows active twentieth-century development within the tradition, rather than an unchanged procedure inherited intact from tribute-tea times.
