Fine, straight green tea from Xinyang in Henan, traditionally shaped through successive pan-working and drying stages.
Notes#
Handcraft and the two-pan vocabulary#
The university’s local-folklore research centre documents fixation, rolling, straightening, initial drying, cooling, sorting and final drying. These operations explain the slender shape without implying that all present-day tea is handmade.
Xinyang Agriculture and Forestry University identifies shēngguō (生锅), shúguō (熟锅), the chá bǎzi (茶把子) bamboo tool and several wrapping, fanning and straightening movements as terms in the handcraft specification its tea-science faculty helped write. These refer to making and shaping the leaf; 'raw pot' and 'cooked pot' are not raw and ripe tea categories.
The full regional name#
Several regional teas use Maojian in their names. The full name Xinyang Maojian identifies the regional tradition more precisely than Maojian alone.
What the handcraft standard establishes#
T/XYCY 006-2025 took effect on 23 January 2025, according to the university's announcement. It is an association standard for hand processing, not evidence that every Xinyang Maojian is handmade. The announcement also discusses how the craft can inform mechanical production.
