betel-nut aroma
'betel-nut aroma' (areca nut)
Definition#
Aroma descriptor traditionally associated with Liubao tea: Chinese Wikipedia gives Liubao's character as '红、浓、陈、醇' (red, thick, aged, mellow) 'with a special betel-nut aroma, getting better the longer it is stored' (特点“红、浓、陈、醇”,有特殊的槟榔香气,存放越久品质越佳). Sellers tie it to aged Liubao: a Liubao seller's article lists 'pure betel-nut aroma' with a medicinal note for dry-stored tea of five years and up, and Yunnan Sourcing calls its 2006 Yao Xiang Liubao 'a type of betel nut aroma' that appears with longer ageing. The word names a smell, the smell of the areca nut (English trade usage: 'betel nut'); the sources consulted do not mention any areca ingredient being added. Whether any single batch shows it is the seller's claim.

Common confusions#
- A smell note, not an ingredient.
- Vendor and encyclopedia descriptor, not a measured property; do not assume it for every Liubao.
- Mainland reading bīngláng (chinesenotes, Wiktionary) versus Taiwan bīnláng (a Taiwan-sourced English Wikipedia page romanises 檳榔 as bīnláng); the Taiwan MOE dictionary was not consulted.
- In Russian, 'бетель' means the Piper betle plant (leaf) and the betel quid, not the nut: the areca nut is «бетельный орех» / семя ареки.
