recipe number

Literal meaning

mark number

Definition#

A factory recipe code, classically four digits: first two = year the recipe was set, third = average leaf grade, fourth = factory (1 Kunming, 2 Menghai, 3 Xiaguan, 4 the Pu'er Tea Factory 普洱茶厂; its location, Simao or the old Pu'er county seat, is not settled in the sources). Examples: 7542 (raw), 7572 (ripe). 唛 is a loan of English 'mark' via Cantonese trade usage.

Common confusions#

  • Confused with batch number; the third digit is read as quality.
  • Factory digit 4 is the 普洱茶厂 in Yang Kai (《普洱》), Jiemian and a 2016 Sohu account, which dates that state factory to April 1975; Shi Kunmu and Chinese Wikipedia list only 1–3; English Wikipedia's 4 = Lancang/Fengqing and 5 = Pu-erh is uncited.
