arbor

Literal meaning

'tall tree'; tree-form tea plant

Definition#

In botany, a tree with one main trunk. In Chinese tea writing, 乔木 marks tea plants of tree habit, as opposed to the low, pruned bush (灌木). Chinese Wikipedia sorts tea plants into 乔木型 (tall trees, 15-30 m in tropical areas, 'mostly wild old tea trees'), 半乔木型 (for example Yunnan large-leaf) and 灌木型 (some cultivated tea plants); it gives no age or height threshold for the trade use. The word describes growth form, not age: it appears with 古树 and 大树 in listings but is not their synonym, and Chinese cultivar surveys combine form and leaf size (for example 乔木大叶品种). Vendors use it loosely ('old arbor', 'ancient arbor'): one pu'er seller writes 'old arbor trees (100-250 years old)' without defining it. No standard sets what counts as 'arbor' in trade.

  • Growth form, not age or quality: 'arbor' tea can come from young trees, and an old tree can be pruned to bush form.
  • Often translated 'ancient tree'; the Chinese for that is 古树.
  • 半乔木 (semi-arbor) is a third category in Chinese textbooks (zh.wikipedia: for example Yunnan large-leaf).
