Song Zhong
Literal meaning
Song (dynasty) + stock
Definition#
'Song stock': a prefix for Phoenix bushes said to date from, or be cloned from, trees selected in the Song dynasty, as in 宋种黄栀香 or 宋种芝兰香. The best known is the 宋茶 of 李仔坪, Wudong (about 1,150 m), also recorded as 宋种黄茶香, 团树叶 and 大丛茶 and renamed 东方红 during the Cultural Revolution; the 2021 grading table, quoting 邱陶瑞 (2009), gives it 600+ years and a peak spring yield of 8.9 kg of dry tea in 1963. Clones are called 宋种仔.

Common confusions#
- Babelcarp says that, strictly, 宋种 is one mother tree that died in 1928, while Chaozhou texts apply it to the living 李仔坪 tree; the two claims are not reconciled.
- 种 is zhǒng (stock, kind) here.
