dancong
Literal meaning
single + bush
Definition#
'Single bush': picking and processing the leaf of one tree or one clonal line separately. It is the name of the Phoenix (Fenghuang, Chaozhou) oolong genre in Guangdong; in Wuyi the corresponding idea is expressed by mingcong and by single-cultivar tea. Included here mainly for contrast and to prevent cross-regional confusion.

Common confusions#
- Some Western vendors apply 'dancong' to Wuyi single-cultivar teas; in Chinese usage this is a Guangdong term.
- Also spelled 单枞/單樅 (Babelcarp). Here 丛 is read cóng (Dan1 Cong2), unlike 枞 in laocong, which dictionaries read cōng.
- GB/T 14487-2017 has 丛韵 'cong flavor character' (2.5.32) as the dancong counterpart of 山韵 (2.5.31). The Guangdong DB44 draft ties it to leaf from trees of 40+ years.
- 丛 vs 枞: zh.wikipedia reports that Chaozhou required 丛 on packaging from 2004, but the 2021 Chaozhou standards write 单丛(枞) and cite a 2021 market-regulation report (潮市监〔2021〕33号) on the name; the national standard GB/T 30357.6-2017 is titled 单丛.
